Missing The Point of the Colorado Theater Massacre

July 20, 2012 by momindcity 17 Comments

By now, we’ve all heard of the horrific shooting during a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie. Twelve people are dead and another 38 are injured. And you’ve most certainly heard that a 6-year-old and 3-month-old were among those rushed to the hospital.

What was your reaction to this? Shock? Sadness? A sick feeling in the pit of your stomach? Or were you too busy judging to even feel those things? For all the “perfect” parents in the world, this is apparently the time to slam the parents of those kids hurt in the theater shooting. Since “perfect” parents have such perfect children, they have time to point their fingers and shake their heads at the parents whose children suffered in the hands of a killer. “I can’t believe those kids weren’t in bed. It was after midnight!”

You know what I can’t believe? The fact that anyone would even bring that up as a topic of conversation right now. Forget the fact that a crazy person managed to walk into a movie theater with tear gas and a gun and open fire on hundreds of people. Forget the fact that dozens of families are either mourning the loss of a loved one or waiting for updates on their loved ones in the hospital. Let’s talk about bedtimes instead. Heck, let’s talk about breastfeeding too! I bet you those parents didn’t breastfeed either. And I bet they let their kids watch more than an hour of television a day. Maybe they even let them eat cake. Bad, bad, bad parents.

What should we learn from this shooting?

That guns are too accessible? That there should be more security at movie theaters? That we should focus more on the treatment of the mentally ill?

I have no idea. It’s definitely a good time to think about all of these things and discuss them. But I’ll tell you what we should absolutely, positively not learn from this shooting: that kids who go to late night movies, or whose parents let them stay up past bedtime will be shot.

“Perfect” parents, I’m talking to you. Stop being so judgy, and try feeling a real emotion for a change.

Now seems like a great time to reiterate my stance on parenting: stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and focus on your own family.

Focus on your family

What’s your stance on parenting? Are you in the MYOB camp with me, or are you full of opinions that you love to share?

10 Things to Do During a Weeklong Beach Vacation

July 19, 2012 by momindcity 5 Comments

It’s Day 6 of our beach vacation, and I’m still trying to master this relaxation thing. Bethany Beach, DE was, apparently, designed for this because I have horrible cell phone service. That means I can’t talk to anyone, text anyone, or check my email without standing on the bed and holding my phone toward the balcony window to get a signal. The girls can’t even watch The Fresh Beat Band, since the condo we’re staying in only has basic cable. It’s like we’re supposed to sit around and talk to each other or something.

Bethany Beach, DE

After getting over the initial shock, I managed to come up with ways to fill the time. I figure a lot of you will be taking vacations this summer and may need some suggestions, so here you go:

  1. Drink cocktails instead of lattes. You know how you like to stop by Starbucks on your way to work or playgroup in the morning? Scratch that. The best thing to do in these scenarios is grab a mangorita. If you’re staying in Bethany, you can do that at Mangos. Your whole day will instantly become brighter (or maybe hazier).

    Not drinking lattes
  2. Shop for things you don’t need. Ever been to Disneyworld? If so, you know how hard it is to fight the urge to buy character-embossed clothing. When you’re at Disney, you truly believe that Minnie Mouse shirts are the hottest new fashion trend. And when you’re at the beach, it’s fluorescent tank tops and hoodies with your beach-of-choice’s name on it. You’ll need at least 5 of these.
  3. Risk your lives at the amusement park. Trimpers, in Ocean City, is is filled with vintage (think industrial revolution-era) rides that will make your kids squeal with joy while you cringe in fear. The gears are squeaky, the carnies who run the rides look like they’re on supervised work release from the local prison, and the height “requirements” are merely a suggestion. It’s awesome. We stayed here way past bedtime, and the only meltdown happened when we wouldn’t let Zana ride the Merry Mixer. You have to put your foot down at some point.

    Danger be damned
  4.  Eat ice cream at least once a day. When you’re bored at home, you go to the fridge and munch on last night’s pizza. Here, you go downstairs and eat ice cream. And then you do it again. And again. There are 10 ice cream shops in a 2-block radius of our condo building… and those are just the ones I can see from our window. The current winning shop/flavor is Maureen’s Butter Pecan.

    Omnomnom
  5. Watch spy movies. Hooray for Redbox!  There’s nothing like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to put you to sleep (if you’re me), or keep you up all night (if you’re Dave). We also watched Smurfs, Muppets, Young Adult and War Horse.
  6. Find the delicate balance between tanning and burning. Some use baby oil; others use Water Babies SPF 70. Pick your poison, but prepare to pay the consequences, Either way, you’ll spend the entire week asking yourself “do I look like I’m burning? how about now? do I look tan?”

    Definitely not burned
  7. Go to the chiropractor. Since relaxing stresses me out so much, I managed to have a horrible first night’s sleep here and snap my neck out of place. Who drives 45 minutes for a chiropractic adjustment while they’re on vacation? This girl. I do feel much better now, though.
  8. Watch teen ballerinas perform. At the beach (or at least at Bethany Beach), there are nightly performances in the town center. Our favorite one to date… a dance troupe of young girls from Westchester, PA. Lira and Zana couldn’t take their eyes off of the Disney princess-themed program and stood at the foot of the stage for the best view. The show was very entertaining… minus the creepy old MC who also danced in a few of the numbers. The bonus performance of Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” was a little too sexy for my taste, but I’ve seen Toddlers and Tiarasso I’m prepared for anything.

    Front row
  9. Develop and overcome new fears. When we got here, Lira was afraid of nothing. Ten foot waves couldn’t scare her… and there’s no way a silly ol’ elevator could. But somewhere along the way, Lira turned panic-stricken every time she’d come near the elevator. I’m not really sure what caused that, but I do know why the waves suddenly scared her. After an hour-long session out in the ocean, we headed back to the shore together and got pummeled by huge wave, leaving us both face down in the sand. Then, another one hit us. I lost my grip on Lira, and we were both terrified… me for a brief moment, her for a couple of days. It took time, but the scraped knees and fears are now gone. We are here for a couple more days, though, so who knows what other phobias could develop. I’m personally becoming deathly afraid of half shirts.
  10. Enjoy some heavy reading… like People and US Weekly. I had big plans to catch up on reading during this vacation, packing heavy hitters like 50 Shades of Grey and the final book of The Hunger Games. Maybe it was the fact that Dave kept offering to buy me a Penthouse magazine whenever I’d even look at 50 Shades… but I didn’t crack a book once. I did, however, learn a lot about Tom and Katie’s failed marriage and Kourtney Kardashian’s new baby. Also, Britney Spears looks great these days.
What do you do when you’re at the beach? I need suggestions for these last couple of days.

Zana’s Tantrum Made Famous By Mommy Shorts

July 18, 2012 by momindcity 6 Comments

I think we all remember this picture of Zana throwing a tantrum at TJMaxx:

Zana was already famous among our friends and family for her epic meltdowns, but thanks to Mommy Shorts, she has hit Suri Cruise status. Zana is on the homepage of Mommy Shorts for a caption contest, and I would love it if MomInDCity readers would add to the list. There are already some hilarious entries, including:

  • “I would rather take a nap than buy Hannah Anderson at a discount!!!”
  • “Don’t push your style on me woman – I will rebel.”
  • “You expect me to wear that! Juicy is so last season!”

And, since Mommy Shorts is legit, this isn’t just for entertainment; the winner gets a gorgeous $295 Hampton Tunic silk maternity dress. Not pregnant? So what?! You our your teenage daughter will be one day, right?

MomInDCity is too broke for prizes, but you can also enter a caption for the pic below in the comments section. Zana has been showing her stuff during out Bethany Beach vacation. Check out her latest meltdown outside of Grotto Pizza:

Latest Tantrum

The Mommy Shorts caption contest ends Friday, but mine goes on for all eternity.

Learning to Relax in Dela-where?

July 14, 2012 by momindcity 3 Comments

We’re at the beach– and for an entire week! I haven’t spent the week at a beach since elementary school.

Growing up in Houston, there wasn’t really a need for a beach vacation since Galveston is only an hour away. My brothers and I spent summers with our family in Kosova, and sometimes that meant tagging along for beach trips to Greece or Montenegro… but that was [cough cough] years ago.

This summer, it’s Bethany Beach, Delaware (or Dela-where?, as I like to call it) . Yes, my Texas friends, people actually go to Delaware on purpose– I wouldn’t have guessed it either. We had to leave DC early to avoid traffic on the bridge. It’s about 120 miles from our house, but that can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on whether you get stuck in bridge traffic.

Bay Bridge at 8am

We were in Bethany so early we didn’t know what to do with ourselves. Check-in at the condo wasn’t until 3, so we roamed around and did a whole lot of nothing. Mainly just dug our toes into the sand and reveled in the fact that we’re here!

The beach!

If there’s one thing I’m terrible at, it’s relaxing. It is my personal mission this week to relax. I’m going to work really hard at it. Can’t you tell how relaxed I am just talking about how hard I’m going to work at relaxing?! But seriously, it’s become a joke to people who know me. When I told my Dad that I took my work email off my phone for the week, he laughed at me.  “Nice try,” he said. “But I know you better than that.” [Read more…]

At The Doctor and Suddenly Not Sick

July 12, 2012 by momindcity 3 Comments

Does this ever happen to you?

Your kid is miserably sick. They’re coughing all night, sniffling, sneezing, running a fever, maybe even throwing up. And then you get to the doctor and they act like the happiest, healthiest kid that ever lived?

That happened to me yesterday.

After five days of sickness, I tried calling Zana’s pediatrician; they couldn’t fit her in for an appointment. They must have used their psychic pediatric superpowers and realized she was fine, but I wasn’t convinced. I drove all the way to Laurel, Maryland and took Zana to Patient First; it’s my favorite urgent care facility– they get you in and out fast and it’s definitely worth the 30 minute drive from the Hill. This was the scene while we waited for the doctor:

“Mommy, take my picture!”
“Mommy, I wanna take your picture!”

I swear this kid was miserable all day. The doctor checks her out and tells me she’s fine. It’s a virus. He must think I’m a first time mom because he also tells me that it’s normal for toddlers to get colds (um, thanks). Then he says to elevate her head while she’s sleeping, use saline nose spray and make sure she drinks fluids. I’m sure glad I wasted 3 hours of my life on this trip to the doctor. Zana should be grounded. At least there’s a Chik-fil-a in the Patient First parking lot. I got myself a lemonade and Zana a chocolate milk and called it a night… and not another long, sleepless one! She’s all smiles this morning. How about that…
